About Scent Work University

What is SWU?

Scent Work University is an online dog training platform designed to provide outstanding training to as many dog owners and handlers as possible, in particular delving into the activity of Scent Work.

Does online dog training really work?

Yes! There are several benefits of online dog training including incredible convenience, the ability to refer back to course material repeatedly and the freedom granted to the instructor to provide even more valuable information than can be covered in an in-person dog training classes.

Are results guaranteed?

No. Issuing such a guarantee would be unethical as there are a large number of factors that go into whether a dog is successful in training. These may include the dog's age, health, training background, the frequency of the training as well as the expertise of their handler.

What is the training methodology used at SWU?

While SWU features several independent contractor instructors from across the United States, they will all focus on using positive reinforcement and reward-based training techniques.

What does a SWU course look like...what does it feature?

What a great question! The courses offered at SWU are basically slide presentations coupled with helpful narration, embedded images and videos as well as handouts and other resources. The best part is, you can access your course material on any device - desktop, laptop, tablet or mobile - and can even download it on your mobile device for offline viewing! Better still, every enrollment option include a 1-year access pass to your course material, including any updates that are made during that time. So you can come back and view your lessons and exercises as often as you want! Want to see what a course really looks like and have a better understanding of all the features? Details About Courses

What will be covered in a course?

Each listing includes a COURSE OUTLINE tab which details the topics that will be covered in the course.

Is there a limit to the number of courses I may enroll in?

No! You may enroll in as many courses as you like. We do urge people, however, to limit their Student enrollments to 3 courses at a time. This will prevent overwhelming both the dog and themselves as the Student enrollment option requires the submitting of homework and exercise videos.

How long do I have access to a course after I enroll?

You will have access to the course for 1 full year. Your instructor may update or change the course during that time, and you will have access to those changes.

How much do courses cost?

Courses are priced depending on their length and the enrollment option selected. These prices are clearly noted on each individual course page.

Does SWU offer installment payments?

Unfortunately no, SWU does not offer installment payments. Course packages will be offered, where there is a discount for enrolling in several courses within a given learning path.

How do I register for a course?

It is very easy to do! Go the course you are interested in, click on the ENROLL NOW tab and click on ENROLL for the enrollment option that best suits you. Fill out the registration form, submit your payment securely through PayPal and poof, you are done!

Here is a short video showing how easy this is!

How do I access my course?

We have made this as easy as possible! When you login to the SWU website, you will be automatically directed to the MY COURSES page. This page will feature links for all the courses you are enrolled in. Click on the link for the course you are interested in going through, and you will then able to view each of the lessons individually, look over the course forum, see what other courses may be recommended and learn more about your instructor.

How do I go from one module or lesson to another?

Great question! Each course will be broken up into a series of modules or lessons. Each module or lesson will have its own course player associated with it. Once you have finished a certain module or lesson, you should see a "End of Module/Lesson X" slide. You may then close out of that course player, which will bring you back to the course materials landing page. Here you may click on either the image or the title for the next module or lesson you wish to go through. Easy, right?

How do I use the course forum?

We have made this as easy as possible. When you login to your account and access the course you are interested in, you will see a FORUM tab. Click on this and then the image for the forum itself. You will then be directed to the forum for your course. Posting to the forum is very similar to email.

Enrollment and Requirements

What are the differences between the three enrollment levels?

Great question! The Student enrollment option is the most intensive, where participants will be expected to submit homework assignments and exercise videos for the instructor to review and provide feedback on. Instructors may also schedule a chat session with Students to provide additional feedback and detailed information regarding the course. The Auditor enrollment option is a perfect intermediary. Participants are not required to submit homework or video exercises, but they may ask questions on the course forum for instructor feedback. Lastly, the Watcher enrollment option is the most laid back. These participants will have full access to the course material and may view what is posted to the course forum, but may not post to the forum itself. This option is best described as a self-taught option.

Student: I'm shy. May I submit my homework privately?

Yes! When you submit your homework and video submissions on the course forum, you may click a box which will render this post private between yourself and the instructor.

Auditor: I have a question about the course...what should I do?

Wonderful! The best way to have your question answered is to post it to the course forum. Not only will you receive feedback from your instructor, but other course participants will chime in as well. After all, we can all learn from one another. If you prefer for one-on-one feedback with the instructor, you are welcome to upgrade to the Student enrollment option.

Watcher: I have a question related to the course...what should I do?

Great! The course forum is your best resource. But if you are looking for questions to be answered by the instructor, we urge you to upgrade your enrollment to the Auditor option.

Certificates and CEUs

Will I receive a Certificate of Completion?

Yes! If you complete the course as a Student, you may submit a Request for Certificate of Completion and we will issue the same to you as soon as possible.

Who receives a Certificate of Attendance?

Great question! Auditors who complete a SWU course are entitled to receive a Certificate of Attendance.

Do Watchers receive any type of Certificate?

Since the Watcher enrollment option is a self-taught one, where participants cannot post to the course forum or participate in the instructor-led chats, they do not receive a Certificate upon finishing the course.

Does SWU issue CEUs?

SWU does not directly issue CEUs, but you are welcome to submit your course or webinars for CEU consideration. SWU courses are approved for CEUs through United States Canine Scent Sports.

Webinars

How do I participate in a webinar?

You can see the webinars we offer here. We try to regularly schedule live versions of these webinars, but you may also purchase a recorded version.

Need Additional Help?

May I receive in-person help?

SWU focuses on providing online dog training, however you are always welcome to reach out to the instructors to see if they would be available to offer in-person services. This is crucially important if you were looking for assistance with more serious behavioral issues such as reactivity, aggression or separation anxiety . These issues need to be addressed in-person so that your trainer may effectively develop a training plan and behavior modification program.
