Working Buried Hides

In AKC Scent Work, competitors must also be able to search out a buried hide! How fun! In this course, we will cover how you may introduce this concept to you dog, set them up for success and keep digging to a minimum. We will also touch upon safety considerations, and what to keep in mind going forward as the sport progresses.  

Course Details

If a dog has never been introduced to the concept of buried hides before, this can be a daunting odor problem for them. In this course, we will cover how to introduce the concept while not promoting the dog's propensity to dig. Working step-by-step, your dog will learn to confidentally master these searches and have a fun time doing so!

What You Will Need:

  • your dog
  • flat or martingale collar
  • back-clip harness (optional)
  • 6'-8' leash
  • 10'-15' long line
  • LOTS of high-value and smelly treats
  • crate or area you can stage your dog in while setting up your searches
  • minimum of 5 plastic containers with grated lids
  • pottying soil
  • q-tips
  • Birch ("Sweet Birch" aka Betula Lenta)
  • Anise ("Aniseed" aka Pimpinella Anisum)
  • Clove ("Clove Bud" aka Eugenia Caryophylatta)
  • Cypress (Cymbopogon flexuosus)
  • odor vessels (tins, cylinders, lip balm containers, etc.)
