Scent Work, otherwise known as Nose Work or Canine Scent Training, is an excellent activity that quite literally any dog can excel in. Formally created as a sport by National Association of Canine Scent Work, otherwise known as NACSW, Scent Work has exploded on the scene. The sport of Scent Work has grown tremendously in the United States and is beginning to grow internationally as well.
But What IS Scent Work?!
Essentially, it is the opportunity for your dog to be a dog! With Scent Work, dogs are permitted to use their amazing sense of smell to find novel target odors (ie. Birch, Anise, Clove, Cypress, Myrrh, Thyme, Wintergreen, etc.) hidden within a variety of search areas.
Here are a few examples of the types of searches that are commonly associated with Scent Work:
Sir Valor Demonstrates the Types of Scent Work Searches
Buried Searches: A search class offered at AKC Scent Work Trials, dog must be able to detect the target odor when it is buried in increasingly deeper depths.
Container Searches: Dogs must search a variety of containers - such as boxes, luggage, buckets, etc. - to locate the target odor. This fun class is offered in most competition venues.
Exterior Searches: In this class, dogs must navigate throughout an exterior space, such as a portion of a park, outside of building, etc., to locate the target odor.
Handler Discrimination Searches: Specific to such competition organizations as AKC Scent Work and UKC Nosework, in these classes dogs must work to find an article with their owner's scent on it.
Interior Searches: This class requires dogs search within a room or series of rooms to locate the target odor, oftentimes having to cope with slippery floors, HVAC and other environmental factors.
Vehicle Searches: These searches are meant to mimic the searches professional detection dogs perform. Dogs must locate where the target odor is located on the outside of a vehicle.
One of the best parts of this activity is everyone can play the game, whether they are interested in competition or not! The benefits of playing Scent Work with your dog are plentiful:
- Gives your dog a proper outlet
- Helps them use their brain
- Can help tucker them out
- Shown to improve their overall behavior
- Builds and improves upon the communication between dog and handller
- ...It is fun!
